Blackmagic Design Lowers Price for Ursa Mini Pro 12K Camera

Blackmagic Design has lowered the price for the Ursa Mini Pro 12K camera to $5,995. The company said the price reduction was made possible by efficiencies in manufacturing combined with an improved supply of 12K sensors. However, the company said, with the new rendering engine in DaVinci Resolve 17.3, showing speed improvements up to three times when working in 4K and 8K resolutions, the new lower price will make high resolution workflows more accessible.

Making a Vintage Caper Film

The caper film The Sixth Reel tells the story of Jimmy, a New Yorker obsessed with old Hollywood, who is one of an extended community of discerning – and extremely catty – movie memorabilia collectors. When the death of a close friend unearths the long-lost final reel of a classic horror film, Jimmy and his cohorts each concoct underhanded schemes to cash in on a big sale of the film. The Sixth Reel was written and directed by Charles Busch and Carl Andress, and stars Charles Busch, Julie Halston, Margaret Cho, Tim Daly, and an ensemble cast of beloved Broadway veterans.

Panasonic, Cinematographer Ed Lachman Release EL Zone Exposure Tool

Working with cinematographer Ed Lachman, ASC, well known for his work on award-winning films including Erin Brockovich, Far from Heaven and Carol, Panasonic has created a new exposure map tool EL Zone, as part of the VariCam firmware version 9.0 update. The new tool is designed to assist in the shooting process and to provide even more precise exposure control.

Mixing Live Action with VFX

Following its Netflix launch in January, Fate: The Winx Saga, the live-action TV adaptation of Nickelodeon’s animated series Winx Club quickly shot to number one in the U.S. and number three in the U.K. Cinematographer Frida Wendel FSF shot the series. As Wendell put it, one of her considerations during the live action shoot was how to play around with the visual effects.

Giving Hierro a New Look

Following the worldwide success of its 2019 debut, the second season of Hierro recently premiered on Movistar + in Spain. Created by brothers Pepe and Jorge Coira, Hierro follows the story of investigating magistrate Candela Montes who is transferred to El Hierro, the most remote of the Canary Islands. When planning the second season, cinematographer Jose Luis Bernal, who shot season one, was very clear that he wanted to go a step further with the look of the show, to get to something different, while ensuring the soul of the story was untouched.
