Christie Anchors Festival’s Temporary Cinema

Christie is providing 4K projection to the British Film Institute London Film Festival at a unique temporary cinema that could become a blueprint for others. The Embankment Garden Cinema has also been built in celebration of the LFF’s 60th anniversary. For 11 days, with a 16-meter screen bigger than most London cinemas, the rigid-bodied structure will seat 800 people at London’s Victoria Embankment. It will also screen the LFF’s Official Competition and Strand Gala premieres.

Aqualon Cinemas Installs Six Sony 4K Projectors

In its commitment to offer the best technical solutions in terms of cinematic exhibition, Aqualon Cinemas in Huelva, Spain has installed new Sony 4K SRX-R515P projectors for six of its nine projections screens. “We want to offer our viewers the ideal image and sound conditions of a top category cinema like our,” said José Antonio Llorente, sales manager at Aqualon Cinemas.

Pixspan PixMover Software Now Available

Pixspan has released its PixMover software, now supporting 4K workflow speeds. The new GPU-enabled PixMover, when used with a dual-processor server and Nvidia M6000 GPU card, operates two-to-four times faster than with a CPU-only server. The company will be demonstrating this latest version of PixMover at the Innovation Zone during the HPA Tech Retreat UK, July 13-14 in Oxfordshire, England.

Creating a 4K Master for Quality

Director/DP Hal Long had a challenge. “The producers (including Bill Rogin and Cole Klapman) are committed to having a 4K master for residual use,” Long said. “And for season two, I wanted a 4K camera that would deliver better color accuracy and separation.” Long, a longtime user of Panasonic P2 cameras said that was why both seasons of Gunny Time were shot and finished in 4K with Panasonic VariCam 35 4K cinema camera/recorders.

Horace and Pete is a 2016 web series created, written, and directed by Louis C.K. A distinctive feature of the series is frequent references to highly topical current events during barroom discussions. This was made possible by having less than a week between the production and release of the episodes. It was also one of the reasons that the VariCam 35s were chosen for the show, according to post-production technical advisor Troy Thompson a longtime C.K. collaborator and colorist at New York’s Running Man.

Sony Launches New Dual Projection System

Sony has launched its latest dual projection system, which the company says puts its industry leading picture quality within reach of cost-conscious theatre owners. The new SRX-R510DS combines two SRX-R510 projectors to deliver a total brightness of 18,000 lumens, which Sony says is plenty for smaller independent cinemas and boutique screens looking to impress their patrons with a premium entertainment experience.
