CGV, IMAX Expand Ongoing Relationship

CGV and IMAX Corporation have announced a broad expansion of their longstanding partnership with an agreement to launch 17 new theatres around the world. The expansive agreement includes nine new IMAX theatres in South Korea — one of IMAX's fast-growing markets and home of its highest grossing screen worldwide — as well as theatres across CGV's global footprint, which includes Turkey, Vietnam, and Indonesia.

NATO Sues to Reopen New Jersey Theatres

The National Association of Theatre Owners, on behalf of six major movie theatre chains, has filed a lawsuit against the state of New Jersey, claiming a First Amendment right to reopen their locations during the COVID-19 pandemic. Calling their treatment by the state "neither fair nor reasonable," they assert that New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy's administration has allowed churches, malls, museums and other establishments to reopen without laying out a timetable for the reopening of movie theatres and other entertainment venues.

Rethinking Cinema Distribution

Last month, three companies, MetaMedia Entertainment, Velocity Managed Services and Burbank post facility Pixelogic Media, formed a partnership to improve how digital cinema packages, key delivery messages and cinema advertising are produced and distributed over managed internet connections directly to exhibitors’ screens and dynamic digital lobby displays.

LG Talks Cinema and Future Plans

Last month LG Electronics officially confirmed that it has entered the cinema market with its LG LED Cinema Display technology. The company further announced that Showtime Cinemas in Taiwan had installed the first LG LED Cinema screen. The screen is 14 meters wide and seven meters high and has been certified by the Digital Cinema Initiatives. LG and Dolby Laboratories closely collaborated to integrate Dolby’s IMS3000 Integrated Media Server and Dolby Atmos sound into the new cinema system. I recently spoke via email with Jin An, product manager for LG LED Cinema products, to learn more about the technology and LG’s plans for the cinema market.

Can Thematic Streaming Thrive in a Crowded OTT Marketplace?

As Netflix, Disney, Amazon, and Apple battle for the estimated global $1 billion over-the-top subscription market, one company – Magine Pro, an OTT platform for mid-tier market video-on-demand and TV content – is asking the question: Will the VOD market be The Battle of the Global Giants or is there room for thematic streaming services that all together could create a wider diversity in the market? Put another way, is there enough consumer demand for specialist services for sports, kids programs, genre-specific series and movies, food and cooking services etc to make it a sustainable business?
