After more than nine successful years at Arri, three of which were spent as an executive board member, Markus Zeiler has decided to accept a new professional challenge. On April 1 he will begin a new role on the management team of one of Arri’s long-term customers. The name of the new company was not released.
Nice Shoes has hired John Koltai creative director with a focus on innovative motion graphic design for film, television, advertising, and other media. Koltai is a multidisciplinary creative director, designer and animator with experience spanning virtually all forms of visual media. He is also a specialist in future user interfaces and other future tech graphics for film, with credits including Spider-Man: Far from Home, Spies in Disguise, Thor: Ragnarok and Iron Man 2 & 3.
Visual effects studio Digital Domain has received two nominations in the category of Best Visual Effects for the upcoming 94th annual Academy Awards. The nominations highlight Digital Domain’s work on both 20th Century Fox’s Free Guy, and Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios’ Spider-Man: No Way Home. The winners will be announced on Sunday, March 24. The honorees named in each are: Free Guy: Swen Gillberg, Nikos Kalaitzidis, Bryan Grill and Dan Sudick; and Spider-Man: No Way Home: Kelly Port, Scott Edelstein, Chris Waegner and Dan Sudic.
Ben Díaz has joined Arri Lighting in its Stephanskirchen office. Effective this month, he will be senior product manager. The company says Díaz strengthens its focus on the development of high-quality LED lighting fixtures and accessories. Together with Arri Lighting head of product management Florian Bloch, Díaz will play an integral role in the planning, development, introduction, and life cycle management of new lighting products.
One Union Recording Studios, which bills itself as the largest independent recording facility in the Bay Area, has hired senior audio engineer Dan Jensen. Jensen brings more than 15 years of experience as a sound mixer, editor, and designer, primarily on national and regional advertising.
The National Association of Theatre Owners will honor Ellis Jacob, president, and CEO of Cineplex, with the 2022 NATO Marquee Award during this year’s CinemaCon. Mitch Neuhauser managing director of CinemaCon made the announcement. Jacob is being recognized by NATO for his unequalled dedication, commitment, and service to the motion picture theatre industry.
The American Society of Cinematographers will recognize the work of four exceptional artists at its 36th Annual Awards for Outstanding Achievement in Cinematography. Ellen Kuras, ASC will receive the ASC Lifetime Achievement Award; she is the first woman ever to win the award. Peter Levy, ASC, ACS will be presented with the Career Achievement in Television Award, and John Lindley, ASC will be honored with the President’s Award. Panavision’s Dan Sasaki will receive the ASC’s inaugural Curtis Clark Technical Achievement Award, which will be given to an individual who has made significant technological contributions to the art and craft of cinematography. The awards will be presented on March 20 at the ASC Clubhouse in Hollywood.
