Documentary Captures Changing Art Form

Nice Shoes helped directors Dawn Mikkelson and Keri Pickett tell the story of the incredible women who are changing the rhythm of the male-dominated art of Taiko in the new independent documentary Finding Her Beat. The facility provided post-production services for the film—screening at this month’s Doc NYC festival—with senior colorist Oscar Oboza working directly with the two filmmakers in applying the final grade.

Black Film Festival Honors Co-Founder Sergio Mims

The School of the Art Institute of Chicago’s Gene Siskel Film Center has announced the full festival schedule for the 28th Annual Black Harvest Film Festival, which will take place in person November 4-20 at the Gene Siskel Film Center and virtually from November 21-27. This year’s festival will be dedicated to Sergio Mims, the co-founder of the festival and its longtime co-programmer and consultant, who passed away October 4.

DTLA Film Festival Names Winners

The 13th annual DTLA Film Festival has announced its winners. Florencia Krochik’s The Rest of Us, a feature documentary about DACA kids shot over a decade, won Best Picture. Other winners included director Martin Torrez’ The Great American Low Rider Tradition, a feature documentary about the Lowrider culture of East Los Angeles, which took the Audience Favorite Award Sophie Galibert was named Best Director for Cherry, a narrative dramedy that tackles the hot-button topic of abortion.

Dolby Announces GFS Film School Winners

Dolby Laboratories today announced the winners of the Dolby Institute x Ghetto Film School Filmmaker Challenge: Finish the Script Year 2. The program challenges GFS alumni ages 18—35 to create an original short film proposal in response to a creative prompt from Academy Award-nominated filmmaker and returning mentor Carlos López Estrada (Raya and the Last Dragon, Blindspotting). This year’s winners are filmmakers Kaitlyn Ali, Britney Bautista, Miguel Ramirez, and Thomas Sawyer.

Göteborg Supports Ukrainian Filmmaker at Festivals; Calls for Grant Submissions

Antonio Lukich, one of the four Ukrainian directors visiting Göteborg Film Festival on a residency stay for three months will be showing the world premiere of his second feature film, the black comedy Luxembourg, Luxembourg at the Venice International Film Festival and at the Toronto International Film Festival. At the same time, the Göteborg Film Fund has opened submissions for development grants for filmmakers working within Ukraine.

DTLA Film Festival Announces Full Lineup of Films in Competition

The 13th annual Downtown Los Angeles Film Festival, which is set to run from September 14-18 at Regal L.A. Live, has announced its full lineup today. A total of 112 titles including 36 features and 76 short films are slated to screen, with virtually all making their world, West Coast, or Los Angeles premieres, and all eligible for awards.
