Ancient Magus’ Bride Screens in July

Coming off the heels of a successful inaugural Anime Movie Night screening event this spring, Crunchyroll, which calls itself the destination for anime and manga, working with Screenvision Media and Kaos Connect, will screen the first three episodes of The Ancient Magus’ Bride, a series adapted from the wildly popular manga of the same name.

Marc Chu Joins Atomic Fiction as Animation Department Supervisor

Atomic Fiction has named Marc Chu to lead the studio's animation efforts across its Oakland and Montreal locations. Chu joins Atomic Fiction from ILM, where he most recently served as animation director, bringing more than 20 years of experience animating and supervising the creation of everything from aliens and spaceships to pirates and superheroes.

Streamlining the VR Workflow

Extravaganza, a new virtual reality short film satire directed by Ethan Shaftel, leveraged Maxon Cinema 4D software and its CV-VR Cam dedicated plug-in for rendering VR content to streamline the production workflow. The film, which stars Paul Scheer (The League, 30 Rock), John Gemberling (Broad City, Santa Clarita Diet), Will Greenberg (Wrecked), and Annie Tedesco (Bella and the Bulldogs), debuted to positive acclaim at the Tribeca Film Festival’s Immersive Virtual Arcade and will make its European premiere during the Cannes Film Festival May 17-28 at the Marche du Film Next VR program.

Dolby’s Escape Premieres at Tribeca

Dolby’s short animated film Escape, a sequel to two-time Daytime Emmy Award-winning short Silent, premiered last week at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York. Chosen for the Tribeca short film category out of a record number of 4,38 submissions, Escape is the story of a lone space explorer who crash-lands on a desolate planet and must find a way to make her new home habitable.

Last Studio Standing Starts with Tonya

Vancouver’s ConVRter Technologies is partnering with Conexion Creativa of Colombia to create Last Studio Standing, which they say will be the largest hand drawn studio in the Americas. The company is focusing on science fiction-based animated film and television productions including science based children's content. In addition, they will co-produce adult animation content that does not fall into the manga genre. The first film from Last Studio Standing is Tonya (almost) Saves the Earth, a sci-fi comedy to be released in the spring of 2017

Art Directors to Honor Brad Bird

Two–time Oscar-winning filmmaker, director, producer, animator and writer Brad Bird, whose films, including Ratatouille and The Incredibles, have consistently reflected the highest quality of production design, will receive the prestigious Cinematic Imagery Award from the Art Directors Guild at its 21st Annual Art Directors Guild's Excellence in Production Design Awards. ADG council chair Marcia Hinds and awards producers Thomas Wilkins and Thomas Walsh made the announcement.

Sony Pictures Announces Emoji Agreement

The Emoji Company and Sony Pictures Animation today announced that they have entered into a licensing agreement with regard to emoji company’s registered emoji trademark. The agreement covers the use of the term emoji in connection with SPA’s worldwide merchandising program for SPA's upcoming comedy feature The Emoji Movie, coming to theatres August 11.
