GDC Technology will be Cinemex’s exclusive provider of digital cinema servers for the calendar year 2019. Cinemex is Mexico’s second largest theatre circuit and operates 2,936 screens at 340 sites in 99 cities such as Mexico City, Guadalajara, Monterrey, Toluca, Juarez, Leon, Tijuana, Mexicali, Puebla and other Mexican cities. The agreement involves the deployment of the GDC SR-1000 Standalone Integrated Media Block at all of Cinemex’s new construction projects in Mexico.
Distributor Neon has released The Beach Bum in Éclair Color high dynamic range at select Alamo Drafthouse Cinema locations across the United States. This marks the first title available in Éclair Color HDR across the U.S. The movie opened in Germany (Constantin Film) in Éclair Color in March and will open in France (Mars Films) in July.

D-Box Technologies and PVR Cinemas have reached an agreement for the addition of more than 400 D-Box motion seats in four locations in Mumbai and Delhi-NCR. The installation is scheduled to start next fall in nine auditoriums and will include the company’s basic motion seat and recliner motion seats.

Systems integrator CinemaNext has reached an agreement with Saudi fashion retail giant Fawaz Alhokair Group for the installation of its first multiplex in Saudi Arabia under the new cinema brand Muvi. Scheduled to open in May at the popular Mall of Arabia in Jeddah, CinemaNext will equip the 15-screen multiplex (2,063 seats) with 4K laser projectors and state-of-the-art surround sound.
Indonesia’s Cinema 21 has ordered fifty Barco Series 4 SP4K-25 projectors as part of the chain’s new build and renewal strategy. The Barco Series 4, which was announced last week at CinemaCon, features 4K, RGB-Laser projection and is ready for 4K 120fps high frame rate, high-dynamic-range and wide-color-gamut capabilities.

A highlight of this year’s CinemaCon, which wrapped up Thursday, April 4, at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas, was the announcement of the formation of the Cinity Cinema System, a joint effort between the Huaxia Film Distribution Company, Christie Digital Systems and GDC Technology to “develop, leverage and promote premium format movies driven by new, advanced configurations.” The announcement follows several years of debate in Hollywood and around the world regarding the best way to move forward with critical technology issues including high dynamic range, high frame rate, wide color gamut and immersive sound. Those issues were widely discussed at CinemaCon and we will have more to say about the show in the coming days. But the Cinity Cinema System announcement stands out because it feels like a watershed event. The question now is this: is Hollywood still the center of the motion picture industry or is that center shifting to China?
