Digital Cinema Report has learned more details about LG’s entry into the LED Cinema Screen market. According to a company source, the screen does not yet have an official name but its model number is LAD033F. The company has not officially announced that it is entering the cinema market and, as such, is not making public statements about its screen.
As has long been expected, Korean manufacturer LG has announced plans to begin selling LED screens to mainstream movie theatres around the world. The news was first reported by the Korean media outlet Aju News.
Hoyts Entertainment Quarter in Moore Park, Sydney, has installed the first Samsung Onyz Cinema LED Screen in Australia. The new installment features a 14-meter screen. Another 10-meter Onyx screen will also be installed at Hoyts Highpoint in Melbourne, Australia next month.
Muvi Cinemas in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia has installed the first Samsung Onyx Cinema LED screen in the kingdom. “Muvi Cinemas is proud to partner with Samsung Electronics to launch the new Onyx Cinema LED screen, bringing the latest innovation in cinemas to our upcoming developments at U-Walk Riyadh, Nakheel Mall Riyadh and Mall of Dhahran,” said Adon Quinn, general manager Muvi Cinemas.
Barco today entered the LED cinema screen market in a big way by purchasing a stake in Unilumin, a Chinese company that manufactures LED components on a major scale.
The Star Cinema Grill in Richmond, Texas, a Houston suburb, made history in June when it installed the largest Samsung Onyx LED Cinema Screen in North America. Now that a few weeks have passed, I wanted to get a sense of how the screen was working, how moviegoers were responding to it and, also, to learn more about the challenges that went into installing such new technology. To do that I spoke with several of the key players involved in the selection, purchase, installation and operation of the Onyx screen.
The Star Cinema Grill of Richmond, Texas has become the second movie theatre in North America to install a Samsung Onyx LED Cinema Screen. And in true Texas style at 46-feet wide, it’s the largest Onyx screen in North America.
Samsung has announced four new locations to be opened in Europe, two in Spain, one in Ireland and one in Romania. Two screens will be installed at Odeon Multicines in Spain. The company’s Plaza de Armas, Seville location will be the first to open in September with a 10-meter screen, followed by the CC San Vicente, Alicante location with an Onyx 14 meter, opening by October. This will be the first 14 meter screen installed in Europe. Both installations will be completed by Ingevideo and Equipo de Cine.
Malaysian cinema chain Shah Alam has opened a new theatre, TGV Central i-City, that features the largest Samsung Onyx Cinema LED screen in Southeast Asia.
Samsung and Harman have installed one of the world’s largest Onyx Cinema LED screens in India’s tech capital Bengaluru at the iconic Swagath Cinemas, which will now be rechristened Swagath Onyx Theatre. The screen measures 14 meters. Globally, there are only two other 14-meter Onyx Cinema LED screens installed to date, in Malaysia and China.
