Shawshank Redemption has been crowned the UK’s favorite film of all time – edging out fellow 1990s classic Titanic to claim top spot, according to new national research. The study, conducted by Showcase Cinemas, saw the original 1977 Star Wars, Forrest Gump, and The Wizard of Oz round off Brits’ top five list of favorite movies ever.
The survey, which was carried out to celebrate Showcase’s Flashback film series, also revealed the nation’s top 10 favorite movies from the 1990s. The 1990s was revealed as the number one decade for film by Brits aged 35-44, with film fans saying their taste in movies stems from what they enjoyed watching in their late teens (18 percent), twenties (17 percent) and childhood (14 percent).
Further delving into what makes a film our favorite, nearly two thirds (62 percent) of Brits said their number one film is one they can re-watch time and time again, while almost a third of respondents (30 percent) said their favourite film reminds them of a specific period in their life.
Screening at Showcase Cinemas nationwide, Flashback to the 90s kicks off on March 29 with Fight Club giving film fanatics the opportunity to fall in love all over again with some of the best films from one of the UK’s favorite movie decades.
After Fight Club, released 25 years ago and starring Brad Pitt and Edward Norton, sci-fi action film Demolition Man returns to the big screen on April 12, and Danny Boyle’s cult classic Trainspotting from May 24.
The following month, film fans can take on a dystopian future in The Matrix – also celebrating its 25th anniversary - from June 14, followed by superhero classic Blade on July 12. Tickets for all films are also a throwback at just £6.99.
Jon Dixon, UK marketing Director at Showcase Cinemas said, “The 1990s has provided us with some of the most memorable movie moments of all time, so it’s no surprise to see The Shawshank Redemption crowned the nation’s favorite film of all time. Our 90s flashback film series promises to provide cinemagoers with some of the classics from that period, so we’re excited to see film fans sit back and relive some of the moments on the big screen once again.”
