Hula Post Supports The Jungle Book

In a project spanning nearly two years, Hula Post provided editorial systems, workflow engineering and technical support to Walt Disney Pictures for the production of The Jungle Book. Hula Post engineers set up and maintained editorial facilities at the studio’s production facility in Playa Vista; at Digital Domain, where motion capture elements were produced; and at Los Angeles Center Studios, where live action elements were captured. Additionally, it supported satellite-editing facilities at Sony Pictures Studios and Skywalker Sound, where sound work was completed.

Oscar-Winning Doc Posts at Technicolor

A Girl in the River: The Price of Forgiveness, winner of this year’s Academy Award for Best Documentary, Short Subject, recently made its world premiere on HBO. Directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy (who also won an Oscar in 2012 of Saving Face) and edited by Geof Bartz, A.C.E., the 40-minute film went through editorial conforming, final color grading and preparation for broadcast at Technicolor PostWorks New York.

Alamo Drafthouse to Open in Charlottesville

Alamo Drafthouse Cinema is opening a new theatre in Charlottesville, Virginia. The 33,000-square-foot Alamo Drafthouse Cinema will be the first in the Charlottesville market area and is expected to open in early summer 2017. In addition to in-theater dining, drinks and upgraded seating with recliner availability, the Charlottesville location will have one of the first Alamo Drafthouse Cinema premium large-format screens in the country, which will include the latest Sony Digital Cinema 4K projection and upgraded digital sound for a truly immersive film experience.

Harmony Coming to Screens in May

On the heels of this week’s limited theatrical engagement of The Empire of Corpses, Funimation Films has announced that advance tickets are now available for the movie Harmony, the second in the series of three animated films adapted from Project Itoh's novels. The film, produced by award-winning Studio 4°C, is co-directed by the duo of Michael Arias and Takashi Nakamura. Presented in both Japanese with English subtitles and English dub versions, Harmony will screen in more than 60 theaters across the United States on May 17 and 18.

Four New Films to Release in ScreenX

ScreenX has unveiled the feature films that will be released this year in the immersive multi-screen format. They include two Korean films and two Chinese films. Operation Chromite follows the heroic Korean soldiers who carried out a pivotal covert operation during the Korean War. Liam Neeson stars as General MacArthur. Lee Jung-jae and Lee Beom-soo also star. The film is directed by Lee Jae-han and produced by Taewon Entertainment. ScreenX will be utilized during the battle scenes as well as some of the other key action sequences. (July 2016)

CE+S Unveils Colombia’s First Dolby Atmos Cinema

Colombian movie theatre circuit Cinemas Procinal has selected Cinema Equipment and Supplies to lead the design and implementation of the first theatre in Colombia to showcase Dolby Atmos sound technology. Earlier this year Cinemas Procinal announced the launch of the circuit’s first Supernova PLF auditorium.

Ohio’s COSI Gets an Upgrade

Closed from 2004 to 2014, the reopened Center of Science and Industry Planetarium in Columbus, Ohio draws more than 100,000 visitors annually. In its earlier incarnation, the planetarium used Evans & Sutherland’s Digistar 2 – state-of-the-art for its time – but with the reopening in 2014, it was time for the latest and best technology.

CineEurope to Celebrate 25 Years

This year marks the 25th anniversary of CineEurope, the most important convention and trade show dedicated to cinema operators in the Europe, Middle East and Africa region. More than 3,500 attendees from distribution, exhibition, equipment and concessions will descend upon the Centre Convencions Internacional Barcelona in Barcelona, Spain from June 20-23 to help celebrate the silver anniversary.

Big Sky Premiere’s Trapped

As the U.S. Supreme Court decides in 2016 whether individual states may essentially outlaw abortion (Whole Woman’s Health v. Hellerstedt), a new documentary, Trapped, follows the struggles of the clinic workers and lawyers who are on the front lines of a battle to keep abortion safe and legal for millions of American women. The movie premieres April 25 as part of the Big Sky Film Festival in Montana.
