Cinedigm Acquires Distribution Rights to The Falling

Cinedigm has acquired all North American distribution rights to The Falling, starring Maisie Williams (Game of Thrones, Doctor Who), an evocative and beguiling film centered on an epidemic of fainting (mass psychogenic illness) at an English girls’ school in the 60s directed and written by Carol Morley (Dreams of a Life).

A Filmmaker First

Alan Blanco says he thinks of himself “as a filmmaker first” and it’s understandable why. For someone still so early in his career he’s had a wide range of craft jobs on a long list of films. His IMDB credits list includes gaffer, key grip, camera operator, sound recordist, editor, sound editor and ADR engineer. Now, he’s added two more credits: screenwriter and cinematographer. Blanco co-wrote Manos Sucias, a widely acclaimed independent feature film with director Josef Kubota Wladyka and shot the film on location in Colombia. The film opens in select New York theatres April 3.

Modern VideoFilm Sends The Invitation to SXSW

Continuing its support for quality independent films, Modern VideoFilm provided post-production services for The Invitation in advance of its world premiere at this month’s SXSW Film Festival. The facility’s role comprised editorial conforming, final color grading, technical support and deliverables, the latter including a Digital Cinema Package master for the festival screening.

Viva Pictures, DirecTV Acquire Exeter

Viva Pictures and DirecTV have acquired U.S. rights to Exeter, a feature film from the director of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Friday the 13th and the producers of Paranormal Activity and Insidious. The film will debut exclusively on DirecTV on July 2 followed by a theatrical release by Viva Pictures later this year.

Bleecker Street to Use Hollywood Software Exclusively

Woodland Hills-based Hollywood Software has signed a deal with Andrew Karpen’s independent film distribution company, Bleecker Street, to exclusively utilize Hollywood Software’s new Distributor 3.0 software for all upcoming film releases. The software implementation will be in place in time for the first of Bleecker Street’s 2015 film releases, I’ll See You In My Dreams, starring Blythe Danner and Sam Elliott, which will open in theaters on May 15.

Taking the Blue Highway to Cinemersia

Pre-production has begun on Blue Highway, which the filmmakers intend to be unlike any film in cinema history. Written and directed by David Marlett (author of the best-selling novel, Fortunate Son) Blue Highway will be crafted to be viewed, or better put, experienced, from within virtual reality headgear, such as the Oculus Rift, or the soon-to-launch Samsung Gear VR, or the rumored Sony Morpheus.

Shooting All Relative

One of the most critical decisions that any independent producer has to make is what camera to choose for a particular project. Such was the case with writer/director J.C. Khoury and director of photography Andreas von Scheele when they filmed their recent feature-length comedy/drama All Relative.
